by Paul List:
Our world has been full of negative news recently. The virus pandemic has changed so many aspects of life around the globe it is hard to think of life ever going back to normal. The way we work, learn and even worship has been altered to some degree or another. Bible camps, summer mission trips, and global travel have all been either postponed, or outright canceled. Countries point fingers; countries raise questions, tensions rise at the highest levels of government.
The economy has tanked. Stocks and futures crumble and retirements dwindle as the market reels. People are afraid, panicked, and angry. Workers have been laid off and some are afraid to return to work for fear of infection. Many homes are receiving bills they cannot pay.
Racial tensions soar across our country as well. From the Deep South to the far north, attention has centered on racism. Hate crimes, discrimination, poor judgement all cover the media sources daily. Celebrities flood social media with quips and quotes. Hate pours in from all angles and ages. We are a divided world; it is us against them.
The Bible has an answer for the way things are. Disease, death, moral decay are all symptoms of an underlying cause. Our governments across time and continents all try to legislate corrective actions to stem the effects, but the Bible alone draws out the true source of the conditions in which we live. The Bible also has a solution. Our Lord does not just tell us the reason, but give us the answer.
In the beginning, God created the universe and everything in it. It was good. It was only after man brought sin into the world that death, disease and moral decay corrupted God’s good creation. There would be no COVID-19 if Adam and Eve had not disobeyed God’s one single command. There would be no economic free fall if they had rejected the temptation to disobey God. There would be no racism in the world today if they had not acted on their desire to be like God. But they did, and so do we.
The Bible has given us the reason so much pain and suffering exists; it is because of sin. If we stopped there, what a depressing world we would live in. But the Bible also tells us that God had a plan from eternity to answer the problem of our sin. The answer is Jesus. He alone lived a sinless life. He alone suffered and died a sinless death. He alone could atone for the sins of the world. He alone brings us hope of reconciliation with the Almighty Creator. He alone can give us the hope and promise of a pre-fall prefect existence with God for all of eternity! In Christ alone can we find hope for today and tomorrow!
Pray for our nation and our world. Pray the Holy Spirit would convict the world of its sin. Pray the world would repent and submit to King Jesus’ authority. Pray our nation would be healed. Pray for the Lord’s will to be done. Pray for hope and the salvation of as many as would hear the good news of the Bible. Pray that those who are lost may be found and live with the love and hope of Jesus in their heart!
